Numbers are calculated at the line rate (1.25 GB/s wire speed for 10 Gbps, 125 MB/s for 1 Gbps, ~12.5 MB/s for a typical cable connection with best-case download). Every FibreTel 10 Gbps install ships with our flagship tri-band WiFi 7 router. WiFi 7 is the first standard that can actually move multi-gigabit traffic over the air, and it’s the reason the 10 Gbps plan includes the big one instead of charging extra. An older WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 router would throttle everything to a fraction of what the line supports.

The real apartment-building trick is the 6 GHz band. It’s basically empty in most downtown towers because your neighbours’ older routers can’t reach it. WiFi 7 + 6 GHz turns the crowded 2.4 / 5 GHz spectrum into someone else’s problem.

Honest limits

Things 10 Gbps can’t do for you.

We’d rather set honest expectations now than have you run a speed test on a six-year-old laptop and conclude we’re lying. Here’s what a 10 Gbps plan won’t magically do.

Make Netflix 400× sharper

Most streaming services cap at ~25 Mbps per stream. A faster line doesn't make the video better. It makes four of them work simultaneously without hiccups.

Upgrade your computer for you

A desktop with a 10G port will genuinely fly. Most laptops and phones top out lower — that's their spec, not the line's. Either way, the whole household gets full speed at once.

Rescue a 2018 laptop with WiFi 5

An older device plugged into a WiFi 7 router still runs at whatever its chipset supports. Plug the old one in with an Ethernet cable if you want the full boost.

Fix a server that’s slow

If the far end of your connection can't push data any faster than 100 Mbps, that's your ceiling — not the local ISP. This isn't a FibreTel problem, it's physics.

Apartments, specifically

10 Gbps is more dramatic in a condo tower than a house.

Downtown apartment buildings have dozens of WiFi networks overlapping on every floor. The 2.4 and 5 GHz bands are packed — your neighbours’ routers are literally stepping on your signal. That’s the real bottleneck for most high-rise apartments, not the internet plan.

WiFi 7 + the 6 GHz band flips that. Very few existing routers can reach 6 GHz, so the band is empty — you get the spectrum to yourself. Combined with a 10 Gbps symmetric backhaul, an apartment on FibreTel 10 Gbps often feels faster than a suburban house on a different ISP’s gigabit plan, because the air between your device and the router isn’t a fight anymore.

Will I notice a difference over 1 Gbps?

Depends on how your household uses the internet. One person on one device, mostly streaming — honestly, probably not. A 4-person apartment with work-from-home, gaming, cloud backups, and everyone on their own devices — absolutely, and the 'nobody complaining about the WiFi' outcome is the main win. The 10 Gbps tier is the right answer when bandwidth contention is your actual pain point, not raw peak speed.

Can my computer even use 10 Gbps?

Over WiFi 7 on a modern laptop you can get a few Gbps in real-world conditions. Over a wired 2.5 Gbps port (which the WiFi 7 router has), you'll hit 2.5 Gbps. Over a 10 Gbps NIC (desktop with a PCIe card), you can actually hit the full line rate. Most households never need to do that — the value comes from splitting 10 Gbps across many devices.

Is this shared with my neighbours?

No. We run a dedicated strand of fibre from our core to your suite — your own glass, not a coax tap or shared line. You'll see the full rated speed regardless of what your neighbours are doing.

Do I need a new computer to take advantage of it?

Nope. Your old computer will run at whatever its chipset supports, and you'll still see a massive improvement over a cable connection because the line has so much headroom that everything else on the network stops fighting for bandwidth. New devices added to the household automatically get WiFi 7 speeds when they support it.

Is the WiFi 7 router really included?

Yes, really. Included with the 10 Gbps plan at no rental fee, no 'activation' fee, no 'WiFi upgrade' fee. We ship it, a Tech Wizard installs it, you use it. If you want to use your own router, that's fine too — just let us know during install.

What if I upgrade to 10 Gbps later?

Just let us know in MyAccount. The plan swap needs a Tech Wizard visit because we swap the dual-band router for the flagship tri-band one, but there's no contract, no install fee, no 'welcome back' form to fill out. Same address, new plan, same-week visit if the calendar allows.
