How to Connect a Wired Device to Your Network #
- Locate the Router:
Your FibreTel gateway (router) will typically be installed in a central, open area like your living room for optimal WiFi coverage. - Use an Ethernet Cable:
Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to your device and the other to an available LAN port on the gateway. If you’re on our 10Gbps plan, make sure to use the 10Gbps LAN port for devices that support it.
What If My Wired Devices Are in a Different Room? #
During installation, our tech wizard will ask if you have any wired devices and where they’re located. Based on the number of devices and their location, we’ll recommend the best setup.
Option 1: Moving the Router #
If your wired devices are concentrated in one room, we can relocate the gateway to that location. However, moving the gateway might result in less-than-ideal WiFi coverage for the rest of your home.
Option 2: Installing the Router in the Smart Panel #
For homes with Ethernet wall ports, the gateway can be installed in the smart panel (usually found in a closet). This setup connects the home’s Ethernet wiring, allowing you to use the wall ports in different rooms for wired devices. When choosing this option one wall port will be selected for the 10Gbps LAN.
Your Preferences Matter #
If you choose to move the gateway from a central area to accommodate wired devices, it might affect WiFi coverage in other parts of your home. Don’t worry—our tech wizard will discuss the best options with you during installation. If coverage becomes an issue, you can always upgrade to a plan with Mesh WiFi for seamless, whole-home connectivity. If you have a preference for how the gateway is installed, let the installer know. We’re happy to accommodate your needs to ensure the best experience.
